Beginning Days Pt. 2

Intro Again, this is just stream of consciousness so cohesion and grammar are not concerns

Exploring I was given today off to rest and explore, and since I slept a solid 14 hours last night, explore I did. But first, I had to load up on water and light clothing because my simple jaunt to go buy a towel yesterday did in fact indicate that it is hot as can be out here. (Side note, the calla bodysuits are maybe my new saving grace and I need more flowy skirts.) Anyway, Looking at a map, I realized a little ways past the mall I went to yesterday is a big park called "Century Park" that looked cool to walk in, and importantly on the far side had a Starbucks where I could get my strawberry açaí lemonade. (I'm sorry but sometimes an American girl just wants what she wants.) And also, after moving to England it's been my mission to try a strawberry açaí in every country I go to, because it is always delicious but slightly different tasting juices.

The park was amazing. First of all, it was full of running and walking paths, which is great because the streets closer to me were not super conducive to running. It also has so much greenery, and spans either side of a large manmade-appearing river/canal situation. There were giant lily pads with flowers, and magnolia trees everywhere. (Thank you new word: 木兰科 mu4lan2 ke1).lilypad.jpg Additionally, there was an insane children's play area and amusement park I'm going to call "my mom's worst nightmare part 2" and truly nothing made me wish I was 8 years old again more. amusement park.jpg Some women were doing a tai chi class that I have to join, because it looked like water aeobics where a young guy in neon is at the front leading while a bunch of elderly women stand behind him, follow the moves and chat, and they looked like a vibe. There was also a cultural center, and lots and lots of elderly people and babies around. (Walking in the middle of a work day probably skewed the demographics, but still.) The primary site of the park is a ginormous telephone tower that you can see from all over, and it is a cool juxtaposition to the trees and water energy of much of the walking areas, and the golf course that makes up half of this whole area.01001070.jpeg

Supermarket After my long 10/10 walk through my gorgeous park and a lovely refresher, I decided to once again brave the mall. In the basement of this mall is the Chinese love child of Costco and Buccees that we are calling a supermarket. Really and truly, consumerism is the same the world over, and any lost newcomer to a country's saving grace. I was immediately stressed. I quickly bypassed the fresh fish stalls, glanced through the free samples at the deli and found salvation in the fresh produce aisle. After asking how I was supposed to take the grapes, directly from a tin or placed in a bag, and if in a bag where could I find them --all in Chinese btw, not to flex-- I saw that people were then going to "weigh stations" where any fresh food would be weighed and given a barcode to match to speed up the checkout lines later on. Then, like any self-respecting American, I bought Diet Coke, bread, peanut butter, jelly, and honey in a friendly bear shaped container. Overwhelmed At the abundance of choices, I decided to leave. Did I get anything I needed to do all the unpacking I had yet to do? No. Did I get silverware to make a sandwich? Also no. But, on the way out I passed through the soaps and things area, and found hand soap. Which, gave me another new word, because I knew "洗手" (xi3shou3) "wash hands" already, thank you elementary school, but didn't know “液” (ye4) "liquid" and I needed that to sort through all the different types of detergents, soaps, and cleansers there were in this place. Then, I went home for a nap.

Afternoon After a brief sojourn, I went back out just to get hangers and a lemonade, and came home to unpack. While the early afternoon was spent unpacking, I quickly got bored and decided to explore some more. This time though, instead of using the gate near my building, I went out the front, and wow it was a different world. Cute shops and snack places lined the streets. (I immediately got some frozen yogurt.) And the side streets were all super cute too. One had hanging red lanterns all down it, and another had maple leaf sculptures that matched the maple trees lining the whole street. maple leaf.jpg lanterns.jpeg Because of this, I did have to cross back and forth multiple times, which is absolutely terrifying because no one really stops for you. For now I just followed other people, but I'll hopefully get used to the flow of traffic soon. At the end of the street were two more parks. These parks were filled with kids on stools getting their haircut, some soccer areas, innumerable badminton players, bo staff training, and what looked like a Zumba class. Once again, I just made my way through the parks, seeing the canals and willow tree lined pathways.

Dinner For dinner, I came back to the street nearest the school and found a dumpling shop that looked cool. I ordered pork and fennel boiled dumplings and learned 2 things. 1: I do not like fennel "茴香“ (hui2xiang1) and 2: I don't yet have the ability to eat 18 dumplings. IMG_8746.jpg I'm sure I'll build up to it though. Then, I got ice cream on the street and came back home, because despite 14hours of sleep, I am still jet lagged, and 14 miles of walking certainly did not help.
